The Wonders Of Walking
September 9, 2008
Everyday, there are millions of people on the streets and hiking trails, or in the parks and malls. What do they all have in common? They are all doing something involuntary, walking. Walking is an easy way to be fit, reduce stress, and manage weight.
Where would you walk? If you are a student, walking on your school campus would be an easy way to exercise. When you walk from classroom to classroom, you are burning some calories. If you are an adult at work, walking during your lunch break around the office would be a good idea. Or, you could just stretch yourself out in your own work area, and jog in place. If you are ready for a walking exercise activity, you should go on hiking trails. Trails are extremely interesting to walk on. When you view the nature of the trail, you tend to forget your purpose of exercise.
As you walk, remember not to walk at a speed you cannot handle. Try to pace yourself; don’t force your feet to keep going when they can’t. As you walk, breathe easily and rhythmically. That way, you’ll feel like you have exercised, but without the feeling of overworking yourself. In order to improve your fitness, you should try to walk at least five times each week, and make those walks effective. Walk with intervals; walking on a hill or mountain is suggested. If you are not sweating within ten minutes of your walk, you are not walking fast enough.
Gadgets are helpful for you if you are taking your walk seriously. Getting a pedometer will help you count the number of steps you make. Pedometers give you an easy self-measuring system, and are inexpensive. However, if walking with “tools on you bothers and distracts you from your walk, it is suggested that you leave it at home or not buy it at all.
Did you know that walking is basically a slower version of running? Running helps you burn the calories faster, but you actually burn about the same amount if you walk. If you think that you are not ready for a run, walking is an easy way to prepare yourself for a run. Take your time when you walk, there’s nobody racing with you.
When you walk, move your elbows forward and back, alongside of your torso. Don’t take big steps. It’s easier and quicker to take small, fast steps rather than long, slow steps. Remember to keep your general body straight and square. Don’t sway your hips or move your arm across your body. Keep yourself straight and steady.
Well, what are you waiting for? Get out there and go for a short walk! Feel like shopping? Go to the mall. Feel like getting some heavy exercise? Go hiking.
