Sunburns
February 28, 2008
Do you love going to beaches every summer? Is having a perfect tan one of your goals? Then you must read these following reminders to keep your skin safe from sunburns and even skin cancer!
- If you have very fair skin, you should avoid exposing your skin to the sun. This is because your skin’s pigment has little protection and burns easily.
- Try to limit your sun exposure to 30 minutes at a time.
- If you plan to stay under the sun for long periods of time, don’t forget to use sunscreen and to apply it every 30 minutes.
- Do not assume that you won’t get your skin burned when it is cloudy because eighty percent (80%) of ultra-violet rays can get through clouds. You can get an even worse sunburn on cloudy days than on sunny days.
- Even when you’re in the water and it’s cool out, you can still get sunburned. It is still advised you put on sunscreen.
- Sun rays reflected from snow or water can still burn your skin.
If you have already acquired sun burn, here are some ways to treat it at home:
- Apply calamine lotion or a cold compress
- Expose the blistered areas to the air
- Take painkillers
- Don’t expose your affected skin further to the sun
It’s suggested you consult a doctor if you have a sunburn that becomes very severe and distressing. Very severe sun burns can even cause you to feel nauseous, have headaches, or to have fevers.
