Freckles 1

Freckles are an increased pigmentation caused by areas of your face being exposed to the sun, due to overproduction of melanin in the skin. Freckles are also known as Melasma. Melasma is a skin condition that causes darkened areas of skin to appear on the cheeks, forehead or above the lips of many people. Freckles are usually a tan or light brown color. It usually develops among middle-aged women, especially those going through pregnancy or menopause. It’s not deadly nor dangerous but it can affect a woman’s self-esteem. The other causes of Melasma are:

  • cosmetics like astringents and peeling agents,
  • hormonal changes due to pregnancy, intake of oral contraceptives, and anti-seizure drugs, or
  • genetic influence.

However, sun exposure remains the strongest factor.

Melasma so far is treatable with a variety of treatments. Conventional treatments include:

  • bleaching agents,
  • chemical peeling,
  • laser treatments or
  • use of alpha hydroxy acids.

Many people do not want to develop freckles. Preventing freckles are wiser than developing them and then having to receive treatment. Here are some tips to prevent freckles from developing:

  • wear sunscreen protection,
  • wear a hat or anything that will prevent the sun from directly hitting your face, and
  • avoid peak sun hours; the sun is most intense at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

If you already have freckles, you can get rid of them by using freckle-fading creams. The most important factor is checking your medications.
